Solange Knowles has taken to the streets of Louisiana as part of a police brutality protest. Many celebrities have taken to social media to express their sadness and to call for change after two African-African men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, were killed by police in separate incidents in Louisiana and Minnesota last week (ends08Jul16), and Nick Cannon, The Game and Snoop Dogg hit the streets of New York and Los Angeles to join marches.
On Sunday (10Jul16), Solange joined in in Baton Rouge.
She also voiced her support for DeRay McKesson, a Black Lives Matter activist, who was arrested during the protests. He has since been released.
"Protesters/marchers have been nothing but peaceful today in Baton Rouge," she wrote on Twitter. "Police are here pulling out tear gas while children are around."
"Yet as I walked back to my car I personally saw @BRPD pulling huge assault rifles out on peaceful protesters...," she continued.
Solange´s participation in the protests comes days after her superstar sister Beyonce urged those outraged by the latest police shooting controversies in the U.S. to use their voices to demand action.
"We are sick and tired of the killings of young men and women in our communities," she wrote. "It is up to us to take a stand and demand that they ´stop killing us´.
"We don´t need sympathy. We need everyone to respect our lives. We´re going to stand up as a community and fight against anyone who believes that murder or any violent action by those who are sworn to protect us should consistently go unpunished.
"These robberies of lives make us feel helpless and hopeless but we have to believe that we are fighting for the rights of the next generation, for the next young men and women who believe in good," she continued.
The Drunk in Love singer has also paid tribute to the five police officers killed during a night of violence in her native Texas following the deaths of Sterling and Castile.
