Suicide Squad is forecast to make up to $125 million on its opening weekend in the U.S.
The latest comic book-based movie, from DC Comics, has an all star line-up including Will Smith, Viola Davis, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie. Production started in early 2015, with the movie’s release now only weeks away.
Suicide Squad will hit cinemas from 3 August (16), and box office experts are expecting it to make a splash on its opening weekend. Pre-release tracking predicts the movie will make upwards of $125 million on its opening weekend in North America, with some analysts even suggesting the takings will be nearer to $135 million for the David Ayer’s directed Warner Bros. movie.
If predictions are correct, it will mark the biggest ever August opening, and will surpass Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy which took $94.3 million .
The movie will also help DC take on Marvel, which was also helped by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year. The film, led by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill made $166 million , in North America.
Marvel’s smash hit Deadpool was also released in 2016, which took $132.4 million , despite an R-rating.
Suicide Squad has a PG-13 rating, and tells the story of a band of supervillains recruited by the government on a secret mission.
Batman star Ben, Cara Delevingne, and Jai Courtney also star.
Australian actress Margot, who plays Harley Quinn, recently admitted how nervous she was to act opposite Jared, who portrays The Joker.
“So when I first heard that he was method (acting), and that we couldn’t refer to him as Jared and things like that, I started to panic a bit because I’m in an abusive relationship with this guy who thinks he is the character,” she told slashfilm.com. “I was worried I’d get beat up on set. But he’s respectful, professional, and lovely.”
